Drive on the beach. It is illegal and the offense carries a hefty fine. Your rent-a-car insurance will also be rendered invalid.

Get out of your car at the gas station. With very few exceptions, the gas pumps are not self-service and you can remain in your vehicle. However, it is a good idea to check that the meter on the gas pump and the amount you are charged for fuel are the same!

Drive after dark if it is avoidable. Unfamiliar roads can be full of hidden hazards, especially mountainous areas with winding roads and foggy conditions being common.

Move your vehicle if you are involved in a traffic accident. Costa Rican law is very clear on this point, even if you are blocking the highway for other users; your vehicle must remain in place until the traffic police have arrived, assessed the situation and given you permission to move.

Attempt to cross the border into either Panama or Nicaragua in your rent-a-car. You are not permitted to leave the country in a rented vehicle.

Allow your fuel tank to run low. Gas stations can be few and far between in rural areas.
